La Michelada - Beer with "Umph"!

The Michelada is the BEST of the prepared beers, according to me.

This time we are at a restaurant called El Oasis, at the foot of La Peña de Bernal. We just hiked up the trail and back down again, and were thirsty for a good beer. A Michelada is beer with a lot of different sauces and spices added. The end result is what I consider to be the crown jewel of all prepared beers. There are a lot of variations throughout Mexico and Latin America, but this is probably the richest flavor and the best.

Mangos

This episode of Treats From Mexico focuses on the mango. In my opinion (and my daughter Madeline's opinion) the mango is the best fruit ever created. In many areas of the United States, mangos are a delicacy and it is hard to come by sweet, ripe mangos. In Mexico, they sell mangos on the street and they are always ripe, sweet, and juicy. In addition, in Mexico, they add lime and spice to everything, and the mango is no exception.

El Afilador - The Knife Sharpener

I was lucky enough to run into an Afilador while I was in Mexico City. They only show up about once per month so they are pretty hard to come by. I fear that the Afilador will go the way of the milkman some day soon, so I was very excited to catch Porfilio el Afilador.

Afiladores blow a unique whistle that lets everybody inside of their houses or businesses know that he is in the street. When they hear his unique whistle, they come running out to have him sharpen their knives.

The Real Quesadilla

Today I stopped after a jog to have something for breakfast. We stopped at a "fritanga" (free-tahn-gah). A fritanga is a street-side place where they fry various foods for sale. They make gorditas, quesadillas, and more. I ended up eating a quesadilla for breakfast. I thought that this was going to be more of a street breakfast video, but it turned out to be more of a quesadilla video. I can't speak for everybody, but I have NEVER had a quesadilla this good in my life. Enjoy the video.

The Best Mojito in Mexico

We went looking for the best Mojito in all of Mexico. I think that we found it in Tulum. Check it out.

Cenotes of the Yucatán

In this video I will show you what a cenote (say-NOTE-tey) is. My phenetic spelling is of my own invention but it gives you an idea of how to say it. I don't have an underwater camera so I can only show you what one looks like from above, but I have downloaded photos from other cenotes to show you what one looks like from beneath the water. They are really amazing and if you ever get a chance to go explore a cenote, you should drop everything and do it.

Mayan Ruins - Coba'

When visiting Cancun or Playa Del Carmen, if you can find a way off of your all inclusive resort, then you can do some really exciting things, such as climb an ancient Mayan temple. How cool is that? This treat from Mexico is not a food, rather it is more of an experience. Let's take a look.

Merengues

Merengues are sold by street vendors in Valladolid, Mexico. They are just like the meringue from a lemon meringue pie, but they are cooked on the outside with a fluffy meringue inside, and lots of sugar. This was my first time to have one, but I promise you it won't be my last one to eat. They are Goo-ood.

Marquesitas from Playa Del Carmen

Marquesitas are a unique treat from Mexico that come from the Yucatan region, Merida and Playa Del Carmen. They are sort of like a cross between a crepe and a sugar cone, filled with cheese. It cost less than $1 and is well worth the money. If you buy one, get creative. After I filmed this episode I bought one with Nutella and dutch cheese. It was really good too.

I made 5 episodes of Treats from Mexico while I was in Playa Del Carmen. Look for the rest to be published soon after this one.
